Pixus Is The Perfect (FREE) App For Screen Object Measurements

Posted on 30 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

Have you ever had a time where you wanted to add a picture to a web site, but needed it to be an exact pixel size? I know I have. I used to open up PhotoShop and set the dimensions in a new document to the size that I needed for the picture being placed on the web site I was using.  That was a lot of extra work! Then, I found Pixus in the Adobe Market Place. Best of all, it was FREE!!! So, I installed the application and it takes a lot of work out of trying to get the right sized images for web sites. PixusPixus is basically a ruler for screen objects. Below are some key features along with screenshots. (Words with underlines will display a screenshot when clicked.)
Pixus is a measurement tool used to measure screen objects in pixels using both mouse and keyboard control
You can measure the screen object size with an overlay mode (the box).
You can also use presets for your measurements and preview how your design/image will look in the real environment.
You can measure the screen object size by dragging the ‘dragging button’ until you are at the position you are happy with.
Click on the cross hair for Multi-Screen support.
You can toggle the guide color by pressing the Spacebar.
Pixus in ActionThe preferences window contains 5 panels, accessible by right clicking above the word Pixus. Inside the preferences window are Presets, Skins, Options, Help and About.
The Presets panel displays various preset sizes and allows for New Presets.
The Skins panel displays the skins available and allows for finding new Panels.
The Options panel displays General Options and Quick Guides Options.
The Help panel displays Keyboard Controls for Mac OS X
The About panel displays information about the application.
This application does require Adobe Air. To download the application, click on the Px image to be directed to the Adobe Air Market Place for Pixus.
Overall, this is a very handy tool for graphic designers, web designers, etc. If anyone has used this application and has suggestions, feel free to leave a comment to help others interested in it. Hopefully, this article has helped you gather a better understanding of this application. Thanks!

i.TV is Totally Customizable!

Posted on 29 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

Today’s article is about an application that I use frequently when I am in the mood to veg out in front of the TV. I have cable through Time Warner and sometimes, I don’t want to have to scroll through the Channel Guide to find something I want to watch. Luckily, I have i.TV on my iPhone. This app is a lifesaver when it comes to TV listings (plus more).
I will try to describe some of the features that are available on i.TV and its uses. I will do this by screen order. We have TV, Movies, Favorites, Searches and More. (NOTE: Any words with an underline will open a picture of the screenshot when clicked.)

The View button (in the upper left-hand corner) gives you four options: Shows displaying all the shows on the screen, Channels to display only the channels you choose with the option to show what is on Now, for the Day, or All for the whole week.
You will see a small thumbnail picture (if available), name of the show, episode, channel number and call letters/network. Some will have a star rating. You just scroll down to see all programs available. When you get to a show you’re interested in, you can click on it.

Once you click your choice, you will be given a screen (the TV Service screen) displaying your zip code location in the upper right-hand corner and a list of service providers. Realistic ‘Coming of Age’ Desktop Customization

Posted on 27 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

I’ve been working on a new MacBook desktop design. I wanted to have a customized desktop screen with the look of a home office that I’d see my Grandfather in. But, at the same time, I wanted to add something new to bring it up-to-date….My husband offered the suggestion of adding a New MacBook Pro laptop with a screenshot, and Voila! He worked his magic and here is the outcome…
(click the picture to view larger)

ComingOfAge
Here is the work that was involved in building the desktop as you see above.
First, I looked for all the images. The desk, the armoire (I wanted to make the desk and armoire merge together to have it look like a hutch is on top of the desk), the 2 old framed photos, the 2 tiffany lamps, the chair with the blanket, the plant (which was duplicated – to have on each side of the desk), the desk blotter, the ink pen, the ink jar, the grandfather clock, the cat, the vase, the DaVinci Anatomy of Man art, the Last Supper picture, the antique phone, the antique typewriter, the coffee cup with steam, the old map, the old framed map (above grandfather clock), the stack of papers, the stack of books….I could go on and on. Every single item was found on Google Images.
I drove my husband crazy….every time he would get things arranged on the screen, I’d find more items to put into the room. LOL. For those of you who work with PhotoShop, there were 40+ layers involved in making this a beautiful piece of art. It took HOURS for him to get it Just Right.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with the outcome and will probably keep this background for a couple of weeks. Leave a comment and tell me what YOU think about this desktop! Thanks for visiting!!!

WARNING: Solitaire City for iPhone is Addicting!

Posted on 24 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

The iPhone app that I have chosen today is Solitaire City Deluxe. The reason I have chosen this app is because it happens to be an app that I’m addicted to. Particularly the Double Klondike game. My husband is extremely good at this game. I can’t even compare to his scores. So, let’s get started with the details of the game in general.
Solitaire City Deluxe is from Digital Smoke, LLC. It costs $7.99 from iTunes and they also offer a ‘Lite’ version for FREE. Solitaire City Deluxe has several variations of your favorite solitaire games. The following is a list of the games (and the variations will be in parenthesis). I will list them in order of appearance in the game itself.
(Click on the name link to see a screenshot of the game.)

No wonder why it’s such an addicting game. There are so many to choose from. Now let’s see what some of the features are that make this app such a great game.

  • You can play a game against the clock for points. The faster you win, the higher your points will be. Each game has its own rules, variations, and levels of difficulty.
  • There is global scoring for each type of game, which is automatically downloaded through your Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
  • The ability to see your name and country flag from anywhere in the world (your score of course has to be in the top 50).
  • There are separate hi-score tables for each game/rule combination. They are:
(Click on the name link to see a screenshot.)

    • Daily Top 50 (which includes yesterday’s Top 50 above it)
    • Weekly Top 50 (which includes Last Weeks Top 10 above it)
    • All Time Great Top 50 (you can only view if you are on that list)
    • Personal Best Top 15
  • The app offers unlimited amount of Undo’s, which let you reverse any mistakes (careful though, this could dock you some points when playing in a scoring mode).
  • It also offers a ‘Show Move’ button which points out valid moves when you get stuck.
  • The app also includes a unique hands-on training system which teach you the rules of any unfamiliar games you may want to try.
settings1settings2settings3
  • The user interface is full of graphical effects like 3D cards, shadows, particle effects, and rewarding fireworks displays. (You can turn some of these features off through the settings also).
  • You can also choose to play in Landscape mode or Portrait mode. Just rotate your iPhone to switch the display. (You can adjust the settings to keep the game in Landscape mode in the settings.)
  • The app offers a choice of background images, card set designs, you can listen to your iPod library or talk on the phone (speakerphone) while playing, there are even settings for left or right handed players which can be set in the Settings.
There are probably some other features that I haven’t mentioned. If anybody has any suggestions or tips for Solitaire City Deluxe, PLEASE, comment so that others can benefit!

A Nice Customization App For Mac OS X Desktop

Posted on 23 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

I’ve decided to wait on upgrading my Mac OS X (Leopard) to the newer version Snow Leopard. Why? I figured that I would wait for Apple work out some of the bugs before I upgrade. I am also making sure that most of the apps that I have on my Mac will work on the new Snow Leopard before upgrading. So, I have been modding my MacBook (you know, the screen, the docks, the icons, the folders, etc.) and came across Magnifique.

What is Magnifique?

Magnifique is a nice little app for theming your OS X. Best of all, it is absolutely FREE! Here are a few examples of some of Magnifique’s features: (Click on the link to see the image of that item.)

  • It includes a free theme manager from within the application.
  • It saves themes that you have downloaded for easier applying when you’re ready to change Finder or Dock themes.
  • Magnifique also offers developers an opportunity to convert their themes into a Magnifique (.mfq) format and provides support for their distribution through the website.
  • It has a preview pane for viewing themes before installing or applying new or downloaded themes. (note: not all themes offer previews.)
  • Easy to activate themes from within the app via the ‘Restart Finder’ or ‘Restart Dock’ features. (Although if you are running any applications during an installation, you may have to restart those applications.)
  • It allows you to mix themes with the Theme Mixer.

Those are the main features of this application. You’re probably wondering how to install the theme and use it. Not to worry, here is a brief explanation of how to use the Magnifique application.

When you launch Magnifique, you want to download some themes. These are located on the bottom of the Available Downloads on the bottom left panel of the screen. From this panel, you can choose which theme you’d like to download (this does not apply the theme, it just downloads it to your ‘My Themes’ panel above the ‘Available Downloads’ panel). When looking through the available themes, you will be able to preview what the theme will look like in the preview pane to the right side of the screen. Once you have downloaded the theme you like, it will appear in the ‘My Themes’ panel. Just select the theme from that list and click ‘Apply Now.’ It’s that easy!

Now you will be presented with a dialog box in which you can either apply the system theme (which themes the windows, menu bar, etc.), apply the custom mods (which are applications mods to match the theme, like QuickTime or iTunes), and/or apply the Dock theme (which themes your Dock) with the chosen theme. Then, you click ‘Apply Theme.’ If you ever want to revert your revert your Mac back to its normal state, just press the ‘Uninstall Theme’ button in the bottom right corner of the window. Then just restart any open application or re-log in to see the changes. Another nice feature that I forgot to mention is the ‘Theme Mixer.’ It allows you to choose different elements from different themes and apply them as one custom theme. You know, a window theme from one, the custom application mods from another, the dock from another. Then, you can save the theme and apply it to your Mac.

Some words of caution:

Remember that there are potential risks when theming your Mac. The files that are necessary for theming could harm your Mac. Make sure you keep a backup of your files. Magnifique is an interesting application and should be used with care. If you apply a theme and it damages your default OS X theme, there’s not much you can do, so again…..make sure to backup, backup, backup.

I use Magnifique for many of my desktop customizations and haven’t had any problems; but, again… you must backup your files! Thanks for reading!

Today’s iPhone App-of-the-Day is iRentMovie

Posted on 22 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

irentmovieTodays App of The Day is the iRentMovie iPhone app. The reason I chose this app is because it is one of the apps that I use frequently and I figured that it was a good app to start with. I happen to use Netflix because it is cheaper than Blockbuster or any other online video rental store and they give you many more benefits than the competition.  Click the link at the bottom of this article to visit the Netflix site and decide if Netflix is for you. Let’s get on to what this app is all about. This app allows you to manage your Netflix account while you are away from your Mac (or PC).
For example, let’s say you’re traveling and you see or hear about a movie coming to DVD or what not, you’re away from your Mac. What do you do? Just grab your iPhone and open the iRentMovie application. From there, you can add that movie to your Instant Only or Disc queue, or you can even search for your favorite movie from within the app. The app will search the official Netflix website and you will most likely find your movie.
Here are some of the details about the iRentMovie app….

You can add, delete or reorder the titles in your Instant Queue. Just use the Edit button to make any changes.

instant queue

You can add, delete or reorder the titles in your Disc Queue. Just use the Edit button to make any changes.

disc queue

Another nice feature is that you can use the Browse Options to sort by Popularity, Title, or Year. Then display by All, DVD Only, Blu-Ray Only or Instant Only.

sortyby

Use the Search Options to search by Titles, Cast, or Directors and then display All, DVD Only, Blu-Ray Only or Instant Only. Then choose the release year range.
searchby
You can view rental history, suggestions, or titles from the apps home screen. Choose the More Button which displays the Suggestions, At Home, History and Account options.

moreoptions

From the Top Charts icon, you can view various charts like the Top 100, New Releases, New Choices to Watch Instantly or the Top 25 in each genre.

topcharts

Another feature that I didn’t list above is that you can rate the titles you have watched or specify titles that you aren’t interested in so that they don’t show up in your suggestions.  Also, one of my favorite features that make this app really handy is that if I’m interested in watching a movie through either my XBox 360, TiVo or Roku, I don’t have to go to my Mac to add the movie that I’m interested in. I can just do a search for a movie that is of interest to me and then add it to my Instant Only queue. It instantly shows up on the screen the movie that was added. There are so many other features, that I can’t list them all in this one article. The website from the creator OxyCode Solutions has more information available at their website.

GeekTool

Posted on 21 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

I have been using GeekTool for a couple of months now and I find it to be a really useful tool. When you want to display certain types of information on your empty Mac desktop screen, this tool will allow you the ability to make it more personalized through the use of commands, scripts and other tools being used in the program. Here is a little bit of information as to what GeekTool is.

GeekTool is a PrefPane (System Preferences module) for Mac OS 10.5+. It allows you to display different blocks of information on your desktop screen. The tool provides 3 default modules (or Geeklets) which each have their own uses. They are as follows:

The File module is primarily used to monitor MacOS X activity with /var/log/system.log, or any file that you want to follow. It is used to display live content of an arbitrary file.  The content will scroll live with the latest lines at the bottom. It also handles log file rotation as well.GeekTool File Screen

The Shell module is the most powerful module. It is used to launch custom scripts or commands like “df” to check space left on file systems, “uptime” to monitor load of your machine, and many other scripts. It allows you to display the output of any unix shell command.GeekTool Shell Screen

And the Image module helps you monitor bandwith usage, CPU loads, memory availability of your server, via tools like MRTG or RRD. The image module is used to display graphs issued from monitoring systems like MRTG or Cacti.  You can also display slideshow images from a folder (or pick random ones). The results are displayed on the desktop between the finder icons and the desktop picture (although you can have them set to “keep on top”), they are contained in a square frame on any screen and sticks to that screen, they are visible on all spaces, they are organized in groups (you can choose to display as a group or alone), and they are easy to export and share with friends.GeekTool Image Screen

To install GeekTool, (of course after you have downloaded it first), you open the GeekTool prefPane icon and the system will open in System Preferences, asking you if you would like to install GeekTool for all users on the system or just for the current user.

After that, the GeekTool settings window is opened and you can start having fun with it. It’s that easy.

Here are some tips when first using GeekTool:

In the main area of the window, you will see the three modules which you can use (file, shell and image).  To create your first Geeklet, pick the shell icon and drop it somewhere on your desktop. There will be an empty black translucent area that sits on your desktop screen and the inspector palette will be ready for you to configure. Set “date” in the Command field and the result should be displayed in the selected translucent window. You can change the text, color, font, alignment, etc…GeekTool

Here are some of the scripts that I am currently using in the Shell Module:

For the day number, I use the following script: date +%d (enter it exactly like that).

For the month, I use the following script: date +%B (again, enter it exactly like that).

For the actual day (whatever day of the week you are on), I use the following script: date +%A (you know how to enter it).

And for the time of day, I used the following script: date +%l%M (same thing, enter it exactly like that).GeekTool Example

That is just a few of the scripts that you can use with this tool. There are many others out there. Just type in GeekTool user scripts in Google and I’m sure some will show up.

NOTE: The version of GeekTool used in this article is GeekTool v2. There is a newer version of it at their website. Just click on the picture below to download their latest version.

Clean One-of-a-Kind Desktop Customization

Posted on 20 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

Today’s desktop customization theme is by Chazz. The reason I chose this theme is because of the personal feel it gives. Also, it isn’t cluttered. It has the feel of a real desk.
Here are the tools that Chazz used to create this one-of-a-kind desktop.
To change the menubar, Chazz used the program Magnifique with the Mistkikons Dark Theme.
To change the dock, Chazz used the Summer Dock theme.
For the background, Chazz started with a wooden background. Then,  got a .psd of a film strip and a book. Chazz filled the book with pictures and text. For the plant and iPhone, Chazz got them from the internet and traced them out.
To see more of Chazz’s work, check out these links:  (click on the picture to be directed to the site.)

Time Mobile (free) is the mobile version of their magazine. Keep up with their latest stories and images. You can also share stories via e-mail or Twitter. Well, that concludes this series. I just realized that I need to rearrange all of my screens. Don’t worry, I won’t be adding another article. This was just a teaser as to what types of apps I will write about in the new Apps section. Keep checking for the new section! Thanks again for reading!

My latest customized desktop was an idea that my husband came up with. He wanted to add dimension to the desktop giving it a look that seems to be moving inward. He custom made the wallpaper on Adobe Illustrator and came up with this background. Then, I just used GeekTool for the time, day, day number and month with the Dagny OT font. Then, I used Rainlendar for the vertical calendar. I tweaked the colors of the vertical calendar to match the desktop. The skin for the calendar at the Rainlendar site is Sidewall. I will post the link for Rainlendar in my Links of Interest to the right. I really like the overall feel of the design as it is simple and clean. As always, keep on checking for other designs. I am constantly changing my designs. Thanks for visiting!
