Netflix Eyes iPhone for Movie, TV Streaming

Posted on 02 March 2010 by Philip Brunner

Netflix still requires its subscribers to pay $9 a month and up to have DVDs mailed to them, but the company keeps quietly expanding its features for delivering movies and television shows over the internet.

As it readies a streaming feature for the Nintendo Wii to accompany its support for televisions, set-top boxes, TiVo and other gaming consoles, Netflix asks customers if they would use an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch to stream videos from Netflix’s streaming library via Wi-Fi without paying additional fees.

The company asked the same thing about the Wii before announcing support for that device, which starts this spring. Assuming customer response is positive, the long-rumored Netflix iPhone app could appear within the next few months too.

“Imagine that Netflix offers [sic] its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on their iPhone,” reads the survey question Hacking Netflix says Netflix sent to subscribers (via Silicon Alley Insider). “The selection availability to instantly watch [sic] includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes. There are no advertisements or trailers, and movies start in as little as 30 seconds. You can fast-forward, rewind, and pause or watch again… for no additional fee.”

Beatles Apps Coming to the iPhone, iTouch & iPad This Spring

Posted on 20 February 2010 by Philip Brunner

A deal has been struck between the existing members of the Beatles, along with the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison, and the internet holding company Metatron Inc. What this means for fans of the Fab Four is that there will be five new Beatles-related video applications that will be available for download in the iPhone, iTouch, and iPad platforms later this spring.

Amongst the titles are “The Journey”, which is a look at the band’s beginnings; “Big Beat Box”, a documentary about the rise of Beatlemania; and a five-part documentary on the history of the band called “The Long & Winding Road.” The apps also feature rare footage of John Lennon at work and play, as well as a documentary about George Harrison.

Joe Riehl, Metatron’s CEO, said:

“Beatles titles are some of the most popular media available and we are thrilled to be able to release these titles.”

Arcade Skee-Ball Game

Posted on 23 November 2009 by Tina Brunner

I recently downloaded an app that has become an addiction. This app is called Skee-Ball from the iTunes App Store for $0.99. It reminds me of the good old days when I would go to the arcade and spend almost all my money tossing the heavy ball to gather a bunch of tickets to redeem for useless prizes. But it wasn’t the prizes that caused my addiction; it was winning as many tickets as I could. The more tickets I earned meant better prizes to choose from. This game simulates that experience.

skeeballmainscreenOnce you open the app, your addiction begins. On the main screen, you will see a ticker like bar displaying the number of tickets you currently have, All Time high scores, Redeem (where you redeem your tickets for items), and Loot (your items you have redeemed tickets for). skeeballscreenTo start playing, you click on ‘Play’ to start a new game. The game opens with a ramp, which leads to seven numbered holes (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 in the middle and two 100 point holes on the sides). On the top of the screen, you will see your score (as you make points), Balls (displaying how many balls are left), and Bonus (basically the level you are playing). The goal is to try to make your ball into the highest numbered holes to obtain higher points. You do this by either flicking your finger up the ramp (screen) aiming towards the direction you want the ball to go. Once it is rolling, you can move your iPhone to try to get the ball to go in your desired hole. You can also hold your thumb on the device and give it a flick with your wrist, tilting it to give the ball a spin (this method is too hard for me). Occasionally, you will see one of the holes light up. When you see this, you want to try to make the ball in that hole for extra points, which in turn, earns you extra tickets. The higher your score, the more tickets you receive.  photoWhen you finish a round, the screen will display Skill Star Bonus at the top, your All-Time High Score, Your Score for the current game, Tickets obtained in the current game, Total Tickets you have. Then, at the bottom, you can click on either ‘Done’ to return to the main screen or ‘More’ to play another round.  Once you are back on the main screen, you can redeem your tickets by clicking on ‘Redeem.’ skeeballcommonprizesYou can choose from things like different styled balls (which can be used in the game), or things like a Peruvian Flute band CD, the Eternity Code, pinktoe tarantula, fake mustache, oversized cowboy hat, and many other useless items that you can brag to a friend about via email. All you have to do to obtain these items is have the required amount of tickets to exchange for the item you want. When you click on the ‘Loot’ button, you will see all of the items you have in a bookshelf setting displaying Custom Balls, Epic Prizes, Rare Prizes, and Common Prizes. I currently have many Epic, Rare and Common Prizes along with over 20 Custom Balls. That is how I became addicted to the game. I wanted different balls and would keep playing until I had enough tickets to redeem for the different balls. My favorite ball out of all the balls they offer is the Brewster Ball. It seems to be more accurate, but maybe it is all in my head.

SHAZAM Is There To Help Ease Your Mind

Posted on 29 October 2009 by Tina Brunner

Here’s the scenario, you’re in one of your favorite stores, you know, the trendy store that always plays really hip music. You’re humming to the tunes as you’re shopping and hear a tune that you’re familiar with, but you just can’t recall the name of the group who sings it. Fear no more, Shazam is there to save you from wondering all day long, as you’re humming the tune, racking your brain out trying to figure out just who sings that tune. All you have to do is just pull out your iPhone, open up Shazam and let it do its magic.

shazamhome shazamresultbottom shazamtaggeditems shazambiography shazamdiscography

Here is how Shazam works: when you hear a song that you want to know more about (either from the radio, TV, film, or in a store) just pop out your iPhone, open up Shazam, press the ‘Tag Now’ button, which is in the upper left corner, and hold it toward the location of the music. Keep holding it (for about 10 seconds) until you feel your iPhone vibrate, then, look at your iPhone and you will see the results.

shazamlisteningYou will be presented with the name of the song, name of artist/group, album name, genre, label and the date you tagged the song. But that isn’t it….you are then given the option to preview or purchase the song via iTunes, view any available videos in YouTube, Tweet your result, send a post card via email, view the Biography of the artist/group, and view the Discography of the artist/group. It gives you a few other options like taking a photo (I guess of the location) of where you are when you tag the song, attach a photo or just delete the song result.

What I really like about Shazam is the clean UI and its accuracy. However, it does have a difficult time identifying some underground or lesser-known artists. I have tried to hum a tune to see if it would work. It didn’t. I think only once or twice it wasn’t able to decipher a tune. But I’ve used it hundreds of times and more often than not, it usually found what I needed. Oh, I forgot to mention, the price of this app…..it’s FREE! Yay!

Technical Info: Shazam was released on July 7, 2008 with a few updates here and there. Made by Shazam Entertainment, Ltd. It is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. It is also available for use with Android and Blackberry phones. To view more information about Shazam, you can visit their website: http://www.shazam.com/music/web/home.html which contains a lot of other information. To download it from iTunes, click on the iTunes App Store button at the bottom or just type ‘Shazam’ from the App Store on your iPhone.

If anybody has used Shazam and wants to share their experiences with Shazam, leave a comment and share the wealth with our fellow readers!

Using Regator On iPhone To Find Interesting Blogs

Posted on 28 October 2009 by Tina Brunner

I like reading a variety of articles on the Internet. I admit, I LOVE learning something new. Plus, reading gives me lots of ideas of things to create, things to write about, things to read about (books), things to listen to, etc. You catch the drift. The Internet is FULL of information, and sometimes, it is hard to find what you’re looking for. I ran into an iPhone app a little while ago called Regator and I use it everyday. It is full of a variety of articles on anything you can think of (or almost anything – I don’t’ want to say anything because everything has its faults). Anyways, Regator is a FREE app based on their website.
The only difference between the two is that you don’t have the ability to use the tools available on the web site.

regatorsearchThe Regator app contains thousands of blogs from the web, as well as a searchable archive of more than three million posts. You can browse from a large category base of topics, search Regator’s extensive archive, view the most popular blog posts on the web or for your favorite categories, view trends of the latest blog searches, keep up with the latest blog posts (which is updated frequently), read the full text of posts in the original source blog, share posts via email, Facebook, or Twitter, and in each post you read, you will find Related Posts to find more information on a story.

When you first open Regator on your iPhone, you are displayed with a list of All Topics (under the Popular tab). On the first screen, you will see a lime green line with a search button at the top left (where you can search for whatever subject you choose), the name of the app ‘regator.com’ and to the right of the app name, you can change the text size by clicking on the AA button until you achieve a text size of your choice. The next line is a darker green line showing where you are in the directory. So whenever you change the category, that category will show up in the first dark green line. This is sort of like breadcrumb navigation. Under the first dark green line is a lighter green line, which displays the main categories. In your main categories, your choices are: Academics, Arts, Business & Finance, Entertainment, Health, Hobbies, Lifestyle, Local Interest, News, Occupations, Politics, Religion, Society & Culture, Sports, Technology, and What The ?(See the list of subcategories towards the end of this article). To choose from the category list, just slide the titles until you reach a category of your interest. When you choose a category, the dark green tab displays your location in the application.  On the bottom of the screen, there are five tabs:

Popular
This is also the main screen. It displays the popular articles in the category you are in.

New
This section displays the latest blogs/articles for the category you are in.

Trends
This section displays a list of trending subjects for the category you are in.

Directory
This section displays a tree list of all the categories, sub-categories and categories in sub-categories (like the category list displayed below).

Help
This section displays contact information along with the applications FAQ’s.

NASA iPhone App

Posted on 26 October 2009 by Tina Brunner

nasaimagesLast week (10-23-09 Friday), NASA released an app for the iPhone. This app is perfect for those who are space fanatics – including me. I have downloaded the app and I must say, it is impressive. Especially for a FREE app. The first screen of the app provides up-to-the-minute current and future NASA missions directly from NASA resources. On the bottom of the screen are buttons for missions, images (which contains a HUGE database of photos) that you can email or save to your iPhone, videos (obtained from NASA TV consisting of science updates, mission activity, rocket launches and other activities), and updates (from @NASA twitter feeds). nasaupdatesThe app also allows you to search for any specific mission, and find information, images or videos for whatever you search. You can also access countdown clocks, image of the day, astronomy image of the day, online videos, NASA’s twitter feeds, and more. Not only that, you can track where the International Space Station is at any moment, as well as other spacecraft orbiting the planet, all in three different views (maps with labels/borders, available visible imagery of satellites, and satellite positions overlaid on maps with country labels/borders). Overall, I really like what NASA has done with this app. It is extremely informative. To download the app on your iPhone, you can click the iTunes App Store Button or search on your iPhone (NASA). If anybody has tried this app and find it useful, comment below to share the wealth with our fellow readers!

A Well Rounded Password Manager

Posted on 11 October 2009 by Tina Brunner

Have you ever been on a web site that you registered for a while ago, only to get there and realize that you don’t remember the username and password you had set up? Or have you ever needed pertinent personal information like your social security number, credit card information, or driver’s license? I used to write this information into a notebook, and it filled up very quickly, especially when I started putting web site information in it. This became frustrating when trying to find my user information. Now, I use a great 3rd party app from Agile Web Solutions. I am talking about 1Password. This stand-alone application handles all of your usernames and passwords plus more! In fact, I use it every day when using new forums or online sites that require registration. It is an extremely versatile application. I have it installed on my Mac, my iPhone (yes, they have an app for the iPhone), Firefox and Safari. Check out the video to see what the program looks like first hand.

ABOUT 1PASSWORD:

1Password is a password manager, which also hosts a strong password generator. You only need to remember one password (as the name implies). That is the Master Password. All of your information is stored locally on your OS X keychain or in an Agile Keychain (created specifically for 1Password). This program allows you to store the following types of information:

Login Information:

  • You can store this information manually via 1Password or
  • You can use 1Passwords browser extensions, which will prompt you ‘Would you like to save this login for later use?’ In this prompt, you can change the save as name and add any notes within the prompt, then click Save to save the information into 1Password.

Wallet:

  • Financial Information (Credit Cards, Bank Accounts, Credit Unions, etc.)
  • Membership Information (Reward Programs or Memberships)
  • Online Services (email accounts, instant messaging, FTP, MobileMe, iTunes, Amazon S3, or an ISP)
  • Government Certificates or Licenses (Passport, Social Security, Driver’s License, Hunting License)
  • Computer and Network Information (Software Licenses, MySQL Database, AirPort Extreme, UNIX Server)

Identity Information is where you store your personal information which include your name, sex, birth date, occupation, company information, address, phone numbers, internet information, etc.

A strong password generator in which you can change the settings for length of characters, how many digits it contains, how many symbols it contains, add hyphens, change letter-case, etc. and it will generate the password for you. Then you copy and paste the information where needed.

iPhone or Palm syncing. If you have the 1Password app on your iPhone or Palm, you can sync it with the stand-alone app on your Mac.

You can change the preferences and change the toolbar to adjust to your needs.

To purchase 1Password, you can go to the link at the end of the article. You can try it FREE for 30 days. Here is the cost:

Single License (single user license): $39.95

Pandora Box For iPhone Makes It Easy To Find Sale/Free Apps

Posted on 01 October 2009 by Tina Brunner

I love my iPhone and I must say, I’m an app junkie. Before I started using Pandora Box, I used to go into the App Store on my iPhone and go down each category by Released Date to find apps that peaked my interest. Trust me, it took at least an hour or more of my day to search for apps. Then, I found Pandora Box and it cut that time by 75%!!! Now, I check it once a day before going to bed and download away.  In this article, I will give some brief descriptions with screenshots (as usual, anything with underlines will bring up a screenshot when clicked). So, let’s get started…

iTunes on Mac
Brief Description:

Pandora Box is similar to the App Store. Sometimes, app developers will have a sale or give their apps away for free (Some for a limited time and some become free permanently.) Pandora Box updates the app throughout the day keeping the lists fresh. Pandora Box is from the company AppZap and is compatible with iPhone/iPod Touch. It requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. Oh, I forgot, it’s Absolutely FREE!

Screen Features:

featuredwishlistWhat’s Hot and Wish List display cool and popular apps.
On Sale (Free/Paid) display apps that have dropped in price or are now free displaying the original price crossed out and the new price shown.
New Apps (Free/Paid) – display the latest apps available
You can also toggle between the Free and Paid tabs in both On Sale and New Apps tabs.
Favorites (is used for apps you may want to track and nab when it goes on sale)
More (is where you search or change settings)
Ability to edit categories (choosing which categories you want to be displayed) is displayed at the upper right-hand corner by clicking the lined icon.

How it Works:

Pandora Box upon opening brings up the Featured screen with a What’s Hot and Wish List tabs at the top of the screen and five tabs at the bottom of the screen (Featured, On Sale, New Apps, Favorites and More tabs) by default.
In any of the screens you are in, you just slide up and down the screen and click on an item that peaks your interest.
appinfoWhen you click on an item, the next screen displays a thumbnail of the app, name, company who developed the app, category, and a star rating of the app. You will also see the price of the app (FREE or the price), an Add to Favorites Button and a Tell a Friend button. Then it gives you a brief description about the app along with an image of the app opened at the bottom of the description. You can click on the image to view other screenshots of the app. If you choose to download the app, it directs you to the App Store on your iPhone. If you choose to Add to Favorites, it will add that item to your Favorites. When you choose to Tell a Friend, it opens up an email screen with the information about the app.  All you do is fill in an email address and send it.
When you click on the More tab, the next screen displays the Search tab (by default), Settings tab and another More tab which takes you back.
Search Tab gives you the ability to search for apps by name or you can browse apps by selecting from a list of categories. The search results display results start displaying as you type with a list of possible apps. Then, when you have finished entering the information into the search field, it will break the results down to a closer match.
Settings Tab brings up a screen with the Currency tab and Categories tab.
The Currency tab allows you to change the currency settings and the Categories tab allows you to decide which categories to display.
This concludes my description of Pandora Box. If anyone uses this app and has comments that will help others, feel free to comment. If you would like to download this app, click on the iTunes App Store button below to be directed to Pandora Box in iTunes. I hope that this article has helped you better understand how Pandora Box works. Thanks!

i.TV is Totally Customizable!

Posted on 29 September 2009 by Tina Brunner

Today’s article is about an application that I use frequently when I am in the mood to veg out in front of the TV. I have cable through Time Warner and sometimes, I don’t want to have to scroll through the Channel Guide to find something I want to watch. Luckily, I have i.TV on my iPhone. This app is a lifesaver when it comes to TV listings (plus more).
I will try to describe some of the features that are available on i.TV and its uses. I will do this by screen order. We have TV, Movies, Favorites, Searches and More. (NOTE: Any words with an underline will open a picture of the screenshot when clicked.)

TV Screen

TV Main ScreenThis screen displays the shows that are currently on TV. On the top of the screen, you can choose to go backward or forward in 30-minute increments. The View button (in the upper left-hand corner) gives you four options: Shows displaying all the shows on the screen, Channels to display only the channels you choose with the option to show what is on Now, for the Day, or All for the whole week.
You will see a small thumbnail picture (if available), name of the show, episode, channel number and call letters/network. Some will have a star rating. You just scroll down to see all programs available. When you get to a show you’re interested in, you can click on it.
Categories-TV Tab Categories to view Types of programming which offer the options of Movies, Sports, Family, News, Lifestyle and Genre ListGrid option which displays a Landscape mode TV Grid on the screen. (To return to regular mode, just turn your phone.) then finally a
Edit-TV Tab The Edit button in the upper right-hand corner allows you to change the Channel Lineup information.  To remove a channel from your lineup, just uncheck it. To rearrange the channels, just slide the channel up or down. If you mess up, you can also Reset (in the upper left-hand corner of screen).
When yphotoou click on a show you’re interested in, the display will show a Details tab and a Watch tab along with an Overview of the show displaying Synopsis, Premise, Genre, Duration, Released Date, Language, Syndication, and Category. You can also click on the heart in the upper right hand corner to Favorite the show.

Streams display a list of shows that will stream through your iPhone.

After you install i.TV on your iPhone, and open it, a popup will ask “i.TV would like to use your current location (click Don’t Allow or OK). Once you click your choice, you will be given a screen (the TV Service screen) displaying your zip code location in the upper right-hand corner and a list of service providers.
