Top Rated ‘Stylish’ Scripts For February

Posted on 01 March 2010 by Tina Brunner

This is a list of the user scripts rated 3.0 by members of userstyles.org from February 1st to February 28th 2010. This list includes a short description of the script along with the link to the download. If the link doesn’t work, I apologize ahead of time. Sometimes these things happen. Just copy and paste if needed. You can also find more scripts at http://userstyles.org/.

Firefox Add-On Scripts

TotalToolbar: Right-hand menus open from the right

http://userstyles.org/styles/24969
If you use the TotalToolbar add-on (http://totaltoolbar.mozdev.org/), you might want to place some of the toolbar buttons on the right-hand side of the tabstrip. Unfortunately, most of their menus will likely open from the left-hand side and go off the edge of the window. This add-on tweaks the direction of most menus placed directly on the right side of the tabstrip so that they open from the right. In other words, they will open inward, much like Google Chrome’s menus.

Compact Menu 2 – nice icon (normal, hover, active)

http://userstyles.org/styles/24979
By default Compact Menu 2 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4550) has kind of an unpleasant icon. As of Compact Menu 2 v. 3.1.x the add-on seems to support multiple icon by itself. But as I couldn’t figure out how to use this I think this style is more flexible.

Personas – Button border images on hover

http://userstyles.org/styles/25145
When using a Persona for Firefox (rather than a theme) on Windows XP, the buttons on toolbars will look… weird when you hover over them. Like, “opaque, blocky Windows Classic tan-colored” styled buttons.
I wanted to do a bit better than what my system and browser provided me.
This style script will give those buttons a glassy border image that still shows your awesome/pretty/super-cool Persona theme underneath.
Because I wrote/copy-pasted this in one go, there may be some issues. Help we weed them out by leaving comments.

Facebook

Facebook 2010 Tweaked v0.1

http://userstyles.org/styles/25037
Tweaked version of the new 2010 facebook style.
Features:
Floating topbar (floating like old facebook toolbar)
Chat transparency
Rounded edges on some objects.
This was just a quick mod, but i hope it is useful to someone.

Facebook: Chat bar displays on the left

http://userstyles.org/styles/25054
It moves the Facebook Chat bar over to the left side of the site.

Facebook – Sticky Top Nav Bar & Other Fixes

http://userstyles.org/styles/25094
This is a tweak that fixes basic usage problems of the new Facebook layout of Feb 2010.
It:

  • sticks the position of the top nav bar so it stays on the screen when you scroll,
  • sticks the position of the left column on the main page so it stays on the screen when you scroll
  • adds a log out button to the nav bar for easy access
  • blinks the new notifications icon to make it more obvious you have new notifications

also provides some other tweaks, such as rounding some of the corners in the top nav bar, drop shadows on menus, and a tiny bit of transparency on offline friend’s chat tabs.
I will update to fix if the basic functionality is broken by Facebook, and may also add other features.
Note that each feature is commented, so if you do not want a specific tweak, just comment it out or delete that section of the style!

YouTube

Youtube Black 2010 no more white on white text

http://userstyles.org/styles/25043
Modified the colors, logos, and text colors on YouTube. Black style with Orange Text&Links to make it always readable and look cool too.
No more white (text or link) on white backgrounds like in the other black Youtube styles!

Plain Black Youtube (New Watch Page)

http://userstyles.org/styles/25233
This is a plain black version of the new watch page with lot functions. There still some bugs and functions can be added/changed/excluded so I’ll update as soon changes.

Glasstube

http://userstyles.org/styles/24861
My Glasser applied to Youtube!

about.com

about.com Confine Images

http://userstyles.org/styles/25148
In about.com forums it is possible to use CSS to make anchored elements, usually pictures, break out visually from the message box and have them overlay other parts of the page or even all of it. This can be used for all kinds of mischievous purposes, using the images as links to other places.
With this little script the CSS features allowing this get reset, so that the picture should stay confined to its message. It also restricts the size of the anchor to 500 x 500 pixels, so it doesn’t break the page layout anymore.
This does not remove any malicious links, so you still shouldn’t click the image. The script can be toggled on and off to check whether something is wrong, and guides and moderators at least are advised to keep it switched off until necessary, or else they might not notice what is going on on their forums.

Stylish

Stylish Window – Gray background texture

http://userstyles.org/styles/25530
Adds a gray background to stylish window.

Global Scripts

Centre (center) direct images

http://userstyles.org/styles/24867
Centres direct or ’stand-alone’ images, similar to Opera.

Rainbow Tabs

http://userstyles.org/styles/24904
Color the first 8 tabs with a slight hue of blue, green, aqua, red, purple, olive, white and gray. Makes it easier to switch tabs with Alt+[1–8].

Glass for TabScope

http://userstyles.org/styles/25225
This Userstyle is for tha add-on TabScope (https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/4882).
It’s my first Userstyle that i have created, in take some example on Userstyle.org.

Aqua Scrollbars

http://userstyles.org/styles/25395
This style should work with any theme.
This style changes the scrollbars to closely mimic the look of the aqua scrollbars in Mac OS X.

iTunes Scrollbars

http://userstyles.org/styles/25430
This style should work with any theme.
This style changes the scrollbars to closely mimic the look of the scrollbars in iTunes.

Tilting icons + Omnibar Support

http://userstyles.org/styles/25604
Taken from ChoGGi’s rotating icons (FF 3.1+).
Thanks dude, you’re a good man. Even though I am reposting this lovely style with my tweaks, without your express authority, I think the changes I did to it makes it even more cuter.

Another thing is that you can read about issues, reviews, and other pertinent information from within the script page. If you have a script for Greasemonkey that you would like to share, leave a comment and share the wealth. If you like this article, leave a comment and don’t forget to tell others about it. Enjoy the scripts!

Top 30 Google Chrome Extensions

Posted on 23 February 2010 by Tina Brunner

I just recently started using Google Chrome for Mac OS and it seems to be working great so far. Firefox of course is still my browser of choice at the moment. Chrome still has some tweaks to work out and one of the things that irks me is when you add extensions, there is no way to change the layout in the toolbar (in Firefox, you can customize what you want in the toolbar). All the extensions are placed in your toolbar, not the status bar which I don’t like. The only time I see a status bar is when a new page is being loaded; however, one of the things that I like about Google Chrome is that when you install an extension, there is no need to restart. The installed extension is active immediately. They have a growing list of available extensions which is good. I would like to see a better separation of the list though. It would be nice to know where the themes are installed as well. I would definitely like to see Google display their extensions in a format similar to Firefox Addons (which is easier to navigate). The following is a list of top rated extensions for Google Chrome that I have installed.

ON MY TOOLBAR (in order from left to right):

Handy Google Shortcuts

This is a very simple chrome extension for all useful Google Products. Currently this extension has total 40 Google shortcuts.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ajdcjichkpcfidaebcomohkhipfokoga?hl=en-us

Firebug Lite 1.3.0 beta for Google Chrome

Firebug Lite is not a substitute for Firebug, or Chrome Developer Tools. It is a tool to be used in conjunction with these tools. Firebug Lite provides the rich visual representation we are used to see in Firebug when it comes to HTML elements, DOM elements, and Box Model shading. It provides also some cool features like inspecting HTML elements with your mouse, and live editing CSS properties. (View more info. from link.)
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/bmagokdooijbeehmkpknfglimnifench

One Number

One Number offers previews of unread items, a UI that fits with Chrome, the ability to selectively choose which services you want to check with One Number, and two-click access to open all services with unread items at once. The following items included preinstalled are Google Voice, Google Reader, Google Mail, and Google Wave.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/cfkohgkpafhkpdcnfadadcibfboapggi

SEO Site Tools

This extension pulls PageRank, domain links and rank metrics, aggregates social media reactions from Twitter, Facebook, Digg and SEO releated tags. It validates CSS and HTML, displays server software, checks for gzip compression, page headers and shares even more on-page suggestions based on accepted SEO knowledge… oh and it can defeat those stupid no right click scripts and does window resizing to see where fold would be on different size monitors. (View more info from link.)

https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ipnenhkngeiigfbhacdhadcnjjklhblm

Better Facebook Fixer

The official extension was loading the core code from an external site, making it slower to load (and less secure), so this one is faster than the original Facebook Fixer. When saving the photos from the “Show Big Pictures” option, each image was always named photo.jpg, overwriting the previous. Now each image has the correct file name. It fully supports the latest Facebook layout. To configure this extension, go to Account (in Facebook menu) and scroll down to Configure Facebook Fixer.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/pfminakhmgplohaiaclohnofbanpdgam

Facebook Chat Emoticons

This extension adds emoticons to Facebook chat. It is based on a script first made by Mike S., then edited by DMaster and finally converted in a Chrome extension by me.

SocialPlus!

This extension adds many news features in Facebook. It adds a color status, smileys, ‘I don’t like’ next to ‘Comment’ and ‘Like.’ and allows you to skin your profile (which didn’t work for me), allows you to use a star rating, and more.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/eidogommnbbcgnhfjkcgjnlonijjhmjl

Fittr Flickr

This extension is for enhancing Flickr.  It adds keyboard shortcuts, tag autocomplete, a lightbox for large previews, quick access to EXIF data, easily copy Flic.kr short URL to the clipboard, and a page action that allows you to easily get from a Flickr image URL back to it’s photo page.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/fhaledancjhefginmkkondfjpnkhdglh

Image Preview

This extension links to image files (JPEGs, PNGs, GIFs etc) as a default open up in a new tab or the current tab. Many websites have begun to use lightboxes to display images instead of just linking to them, but not all.  This extension creates the lightbox functionality for all web pages. Image Preview is unobtrusive and you’ll barely notice that it is even there. If you want to save an image or view it in a new tab, you can still right-click on it or do it from the menu. This extension currently does not work with links to images that were rendered with AJAX requests.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/onjnjkdpcenccelaggaiakhmkjlcedab

Stop Autoplay for YouTube

YouTube autoplay is annoying when you open a lot of pages at a time, but many extensions that turn it off also stop the pre-buffering of the video, which is crucial for slow networks. This extension stops YouTubes autoplay but continues buffering.
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/lgdfnbpkmkkdhgidgcpdkgpdlfjcgnnh

Overall, Google Chrome is fast and easy to use. If you use Google Chrome and have tips and tricks you want to share or any extensions that you want to add to the list, please leave a comment. If you liked this article, share it with people you know and leave a comment.

It is all trial and error. What I like about the userstyles.org site is that you can view the code of the script, read any comments in the discussion, and some of the scripts pages will show you a before and after shot of the script. If you have a script for Stylish that you would like to share, leave a comment and share the wealth. If you like this article, leave a comment and don’t forget to tell others about it. Enjoy the scripts!

I hope that you can find something useful from this list. I use a few of them myself. However, I cannot guarantee that they will work for you. Some scripts conflict with each other. It is all trial and error. What is cool though, is if you do have a problem with a script, you can leave information with the creator on their script page. Another thing is that you can read about issues, reviews, and other pertinent information from within the script page. If you have a script for Greasemonkey that you would like to share, leave a comment and share the wealth. If you like this article, leave a comment and don’t forget to tell others about it. Enjoy the scripts!

Top 15 Stylish Google Scripts

Posted on 18 February 2010 by Tina Brunner

Recently, I wrote about Greasemonkey user scripts. Today, I am writing about Stylish, which is another Firefox add-on for finding and using scripts to restyle your favorite websites.
To install Stylish, go to add-ons for Firefox and search for Stylish. Once the results are displayed, click the ‘Add to Firefox’ button.
Once you restart Firefox, you will see a ‘S’ box in your status bar. From this box, you can Manage styles,  Turn all styles off, Find styles for this site (which directs you to a new tab using userstyles.org, and displays styles available for the site you were on), Write new styles, and a list of the styles that are being used for the site you are on (once you install scripts for your favorite sites).
There are a couple of differences between Greasemonkey (which scripts JavaScript) and Stylish (which styles CSS). One is, once you install a userscript from Stylish, it immediately takes effect (no need to refresh your screen). Second, you manage your scripts from the same display as your Firefox extensions, plugins, and themes window. Third, you can edit your downloaded scripts from the Stylish window and preview your changes before saving (unlike Greasemonkey, which uses an external editor).
The following list is for the top Google scripts used in Stylish.

IGOOGLE SCRIPTS

iGoogle: Compact & Transparent top bar

This style removes a TON of padding and margins, allowing for more feeds and gadgets on your iGoogle homepage without scrolling. It reduces all headers and RSS links to be single-line only. It also removes the header and footer spacing. As a bonus, this style removes some of the header image, and makes the white bar at the top transparent. Because the text is white, it works best on dark themes.
http://userstyles.org/styles/8037

New iGoogle – Hide The Sidebar, etc.

This style hides the side bar and a couple other annoying things in the new iGoogle.
http://userstyles.org/styles/11373

GMAIL SCRIPTS

Gmail – Simple Header

Removes the header and footer and leaves the search box at the top so that you can focus on using the keyboard shortcut.
http://userstyles.org/styles/19999

Gmail Ads-block and Full-width

This style removes ads and widens the message area of Gmail.
http://userstyles.org/styles/22317

Minimize Labels in Gmail

This style minimizes all labels in gmail to look only like a box. If you mouseover each box, it will expand to show you the name of the label. This greatly increases the amount of space for text in your inbox, especially for emails with many tags on them. The ad sidebar is shrunk down to save space, hovering over it will give you access to the options such as print, new document, and new window.
http://userstyles.org/styles/19588

GOOGLE CALENDAR SCRIPT

Helvetical – Google Calendar User Style

A user style based on Helvetireader by Jon Hicks
Has coloured ‘Other Calendars’ and support for https:// hosted calendars.
Color coded events in the ‘Months’ section, along with RSVP coloring and line-throughs.
http://userstyles.org/styles/20669

GOOGLE DOCS SCRIPT

Google Docs – Mac OS X Leopard Theme

Transform Google Docs into a Mac OS X Leopard app. The buttons are modeled after the leopard Finder toolbar buttons, as are the toolbars. All menus and contextual (right-click) menus are themed to look like the native Mac OS X menus. This theme also styles Google Docs’ DHTML windows to match the actual window chrome from OS X, adding shadows, status bars, lighting and cursor modifications to complete the effect – the two types of windows should look identical after enabling this theme.
http://userstyles.org/styles/22994

GOOGLE MAPS SCRIPT

Google Maps – Minimal

This is a full screen view of Google Maps. To view the sidebar, move your mouse to left side to show sidebar
.
http://userstyles.org/styles/3520

YOUTUBE SCRIPTS

YouTube – Clean

This style removes all the “crap” on youtube for a more user friendly experience.
http://userstyles.org/styles/23215

YouTube Cleaned Up

Gets right of the footer, copyright, google ads, big frontpage ad, side announcement box, “may not be suitable for minors” warning, and other annoyances.
http://userstyles.org/styles/12702

GOOGLE BOOKMARKS AND HISTORY SCRIPT

Google Bookmarks & History – Simple Header

Simplify Google Bookmarks and Google Web History.
http://userstyles.org/styles/20001

GOOGLE GROUPS SCRIPT

Usable Google Groups ! Ads & Footer

Great font, remove Ads and Footer
http://userstyles.org/styles/3724

GOOGLE NEWS SCRIPT

Helvetinews – Google News

Inspired by Jon Hicks’s Helvetireader (http://helvetireader.com/) and Ad Taylor’s Helvetical (http://www.iamadtaylor.com/helvetical/), this is a Google News user style in the same vein.
*note that this doesn’t restyle Google News Archive pages, because the html for the archive is oddly not marked-up with any ids or classes.
http://userstyles.org/styles/20830

GOOGLE NOTEBOOK SCRIPTS

Google Notebook

This style simplifies the Google Notebook interface to a more minimalistic one removing a lot of the unnecessary bars and other content.
http://userstyles.org/styles/17400

Google Notebook full width

The public view of the Google Notebook is 800px width. This style removes the limitation.
http://userstyles.org/styles/7383

I like many things about the add-on Stylish and think you will too. It’s easy to use and adapt to. If you use Stylish and have add-ons you’d like to share, leave a comment and share the wealth with our fellow readers. If you liked this article, please leave a comment.

Top 20 Greasemonkey Scripts For Firefox

Posted on 17 February 2010 by Tina Brunner

Firefox happens to be my favorite browser. I have used it for quite a while now, and use a variety of add-ons, Greasemonkey scripts, along with Stylish scripts to make it a better browsing experience. In this article, I will be listing the top 20 Greasemonkey user scripts that I use. For those of you who don’t know about user scripts, here is the best definition I can give:
Scripts are used to extend the functionality of existing web applications, web sites, etc., created by a community of developers. Greasemonkey scripts are considered to be a browser add-on that gives you the ability to integrate Javascript-based modifications to a site when you load it.
To use scripts, you will want to install Greasemonkey, which gives you access to thousands of scripts to use for a better browsing experience. Once you install Greasemonkey, you will also want to install another Firefox add-on ‘Greasefire’ to help you find scripts for a page that you want to make more user friendly.
Here is how it works:
Lets say you are on iGoogle and you want to have a different way of viewing iGoogle. All you do is right-click on the monkey face (Greasemonkey), and at the top of the list, you will see how many scripts are available for iGoogle. Hover to that menu item and click it to open the list. Here is where you will be able to see the name of the script, rank, update, and a description. You can also sort the list by name, rank, or update. When you find a script that you want to use, click on Install “name of the script” and it will bring up a pop-up window with a warning. Just click on Install if you trust the source. Once you have installed the script, hit your ‘refresh’ button to see the script in action.
If you decide not to use Greasefire, or are having problems with Greasefire (which I had been having since updating to Firefox 3.6), you can find specific scripts for Greasemonkey at http://userscripts.org which currently has over 45,000 scripts for you to choose from.
Now, enough about how scripts work and where to find them, let’s get to the list!
(NOTE: Most of the images will have the before and after shot. Some screens may not look exactly like yours, I use Stylish also – read about it in the next article.)

GOOGLE SEARCH SCRIPT
